Description:
Nancy Van Deren's painting is influenced by landscape and nature--but in a distilled, abstract sense. Van Deren uses California colors--the palette of Richard Diebenkorn--in this painting entitled "Passage". Van Deren often works on smallish, contained panels where she is obsessive about structure. When Van Deren moves to canvas, her work blooms as in this vibrant piece painted with a palette knife. Van Deren has taught at Rhode Island School of Design (her course was entitled Nature: Dead or Alive?) and at University of California at Berkeley. Van Deren's exhibition history includes: Whitney Museum Annuals (NYC), Parrish Art Museum (Southhampton, NY), Jo Rain Gallery (Dublin, Ireland) and Sarah Rentschler Gallery (NYC).
